Back in December Swoon was in London for her first ever UK show called Murmuration, which was a mind blowing installation held at Black Rat Gallery and succeeded in taking the street art work we’ve been used to seeing in London into a larger gallery environment. Her paste works, often of her friends and family have cropped up around the world with a few spotted on the streets of London as she prepared for this show. The Murmuration installation was three weeks in the making and saw Swoon totally transform the gallery space into a world of her elaborate paper cuts and three dimensional pieces which towered Black Rat.

Although not the first person to give film a bit of a remix, the choices he has chosen to cast in these film poster remakes gives you pause for thought to wonder just what it would be like if Sean Connery was in The Fifth Element or John Wayne was in fact Superman. Take a look below at some of our favourites and for the full set visit Peter Stults site.

Although our coverage of Art leans towards that of Street Art in the majority, every now and then we like to venture a field and see what the more fine and contemporary shows bring. When at some of these shows I’ve often questioned the value behind some work which to me doesn’t seem to be pleasing on the eye or have much meaning, so I now tend to visit the larger events like the Frieze Art Fair. With such a large number of exhibitors on display it’s these events which personally give me the best chance to view a range of different styles from a host of artists and see something I like. But personal viewpoints aside, the next event on the calendar to see a range of different styles came from the London Art Fair.

Held in Islington, the London Art Fair presents over 100 galleries featuring contemporary work from leading figures and emerging talent. The show runs until this Sunday 22nd January and is worth a visit. Below are a few shots taken on my iPhone, as I clumsily forgot my camera, but should still give you a feel for the different styles on display.

Back in December we saw the latest invasion by everyone’s favourite retro game loving street artist, Invader. Coming just a few months after his VNA cover feature the streets of London were treated to a few new outside works in Central and South London as well as his Outsiders show.

I’ve been a fan of Invader ever since moving to London and noticing the bright array of space invader mosaics dotted around the capital. Although some have since been taken down or stolen, there have been more than one hundred works put up since the first of his many invasions.

I was eager to find the newest additions on his recent jaunt having first caught word of the newest Invader work at the beginning of December by Lazarides gallery in Rathbone Place, however we were too late to view his subsequent workings in Brixton which some nifty fingers had gotten hold off.

His show at Outsiders was a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of nearby Oxford Street as we stepped away from the last minute Christmas shoppers into a surreal and spaced out display of Invader’s work. Attack of the Space Waffles showcased his brand new mosaic Alias’, an Invader disco ball and a 20 minute documentary which covered a range of his escapades in getting the work on the streets. A nice touch was added throughout the exhibition where visitors could refuel with a space waffle, dispensed from a specially made waffle machine. Tasty.

Just like previous works which people have tried to take down for their own collection or means, word reached us that these space waffles had made the odd EBay listing or two.

More pictures, including the infamous Space Waffle Machine are after the jump.

Recently Village Underground played host to the world’s first live music video as part of the latest Rizlab project. Ghostpoet and Mike Skinner’s new band The D.O.T brainstormed the idea of an interactive music video led by fans suggestions, which culminated in thousands of online viewers choosing from multi-choice options in real time that were recreated as they guys performed.

In the video below you’ll see them face a yeti in a snowstorm, cheerleading quartet, bad disco dancers, a choreographed boy band and a Spinal tab homage.

Those lucky enough to attend enjoyed DJ sets from xxxy and dBridge and went home with a limited edition, numbered, hand stamped RizLab white vinyl 12’ copy of ‘Trouble’, which features an amazing remix by rising Manchester based producer Damu.

Past Rizlab projects have involved blending audio and visual with Jamie xx and Quayola while Bestival saw the Friendly Fires paying homage to the past, present and future of dance music. We look forward to seeing what Rizlab have planned for 2012.

It’s fair to say that football and fashion go together, ever since the 80′s when casual culture was born and the terraces were full of men who would spend more time getting ready for the match than they would a Saturday night with the missus. As trends came and went Fred Perry polos, Pringle jumpers and Stone Island coats became a mainstay in the fans wardrobe, although it seemed in the early noughties you were never too far from a Burberry clad warrior more intent on fighting than football. Our look this week focuses on those Saturdays at the football with an upgrade to the standard match day attire that will have you looking ahead of the crowd in the pub, the ground and ready for the post game evening frolics.

A new exhibition celebrating the boombox opens tomorrow with a private view and proceeding show that will take a vibrant look at this old-school icon. The Boombox Project by Lyle Owerko is presented by London Gallery Whisper in collaboration with XOYO and will run into the new year, featuring contemporary fine art portraits of an array of vintage boomboxes.

Lyle Owerko is a New York based filmmaker and photographer who has directed music videos for artists such as Rufus Wainwright and American HI-FI. He also shot the cover for the September 11, 2001 issue of Time, which was ranked as one of the most important magazine covers in the past 40 years by the American Society Of Magazine Editors.

Beloved by rappers, b-boys and dancers alike, the boombox has played an iconic role in Hip-Hop and street culture and is a subject close to Owerko’s heart. Stemming from a trip to Tokyo in 2001 where he found a mint condition late-seventies Victor JVC at an outdoor market, Owerko became an avid collector of rare and obscure boombox models and went on to document these cult objects in his book: The Boombox Project: The Machines, The Music, and The Urban Underground, featuring an introduction by Spike Lee.

This will be the first time that the full exhibition is on public display in the UK and as a lover of Hip-Hop culture I’m particularly looking forward to catching this show, with those thoughts echoed by the Director of Whisper Gallery, Jamie Wood who said “Owerko’s work is sought after by many major art collectors, in fact the V&A recently acquired one of his boomboxes in to their permanent collection. So, we’re really proud to be presenting the work of such a talented individual in our gallery and to be able to offer limited edition prints of his work to those who want to take a little bit of this remarkable photoseries home with them.”

The private view for the launch of The Boombox Project at XOYO on Thursday 1st December will see a selection of Owerko’s Boombox prints displayed, and will be followed by a one-off London gig from Brooklyn based ‘Art Rap/Freak Folk/World Music’ duo Das Racist.
The Boombox Project will be on public view at XOYO from 2nd December to 7th December. A larger selection of prints will be on display at Whisper gallery from 9th December – 14th January, with a private view at the gallery on 8th December. All 27 prints in the photoseries will be on display across both locations. Lyle Owerko’s prints will be displayed in a range of sizes at Whisper and XOYO, from 16 x 20 inches to 60 x 89 inches. All prints on display will be available in limited numbers to purchase at Whisper and XOYO and online at www.whisperfineart.co.uk, with prices starting from £600.
