Tiger HD Ninja Tune lo res flyer
Ninja Tune are arguably one of the finest independent record labels around and have released records by some great acts like Roots Manuva, Mr Scruff, TY and Spank Rock to name a few. Tonight (Wednesday) at Fabric they are showcasing some of their newer talents as part of a new series of nights by Tiger Beer called ‘Hidden Depths’. The night, in association with Black Atlantic will take a look at some the UK’s most innovative record labels with a series of club and live nights which promises to get off to a cracking start with the line up on offer.

The main event is a live performance from Brainfeeder’s Thundercat in what will only be his second UK performance with support provided by the talents of Ninja affiliated artist Floating Points and new signing Slugabed, with Offshore representing Big Dada. There will also be a chance to pick up one of the 200 customised Ninja Tune / Brainfeeder / Big Dada t-shirts given away to the first 200 attendees on the night which will be screen printed there and then by Hit+Run.

Ahead of the night Tiger Beer sat down with Ninja Tune bosses Jonathan More and Peter Quicke ahead of the Hidden Depths show to discuss how they got started and some of the changes they’ve witnessed in the 20 plus years of the groundbreaking label’s history.

Also to get you in the mood for the night one of the support acts Slugabed has put together the mix below which brings together a wealth of music from the Ninja Tune vaults including tracks Bok Bok & L-Vis 1990, Zomby, Dwight Trible And The Life Force Trio, Slugabed himself and much more.

After the success of last years Know The Not Known Series it looks as though Tiger Beer are on to another winner with their Hidden Depths series.

Our going out guide is here to help you plan the weekend ahead as we give you our pick of the galleries to visit, nights out to head to and the threads to wear. If you are a promoter or curator and want your event mentioned please feel free to get in touch.

Galleries
Tonight sees the re-design of the smoking area at XOYO so to celebrate they are having an exhibition from 6-9pm where you can meet the illustrators. Alasdair Ferguson, Susie Hogarth, Victoria Sin and Argir Ziovsky will be showing some of their exclusive artwork while Desperados will be providing drinks. There is also an opening out west as Pure Evil, one day after his appearance on The Apprentice will be having a night of artwork, music and drinks at the WeBe3 Gallery in West Kensington. As well as selling his new collection he’ll doing a live screen printing session. Let’s just hope none of The Apprentice contestants are working for him tonight. Friday isn’t normally a night for show openings but Tony’s Gallery are hosting the launch of their latest show featuring the talents of MisterTheFreak and FAIF with their latest body of works ‘Santa Teresa Hotel ‘Room 479′. The show runs from the following day until the 3rd June.

There are also shows by Bael at Signal Gallery and Static at Whisper Fine Art still running and well worth your time, while the success of the Roa ‘Hypnagogia’ show has seen an extended opening by Stolen Space, with the work at their gallery space now on display until the 20th May. Please note the Osborne Street space has now closed.

Nights Out
One of the biggest names in house and one half of the legendary Masters at Work, Kenny Dope is playing a Hip-Hop set at East Village. Perhaps not as well known for his association with Hip-Hop as he is with House music, but don’t be fooled this guy knows his stuff and will be playing a range of beats and breaks not to dissimilar to the mixes we’ve been rinsing on his Soundcloud of late. This is a big weekend for going out with your choice spoilt by what’s on offer and moving from one legend to the next, Wiley is having another Eskimo Dance at Proud with the likes of JME, Newham Generals and Marcus Nasty just some of the names featured on the bill. Moving into the rest of the weekend there’s the an interesting new night beginning with Bugged Out where the 2 Bears will be joined each night by a DJ which has been a big influence on them, in this case it’s Derrick Carter. Closing out the weekend is the legendary Grandmaster Flash who is playing at Up On The Roof at Brixton Clubhouse.

Sounds for the Weekend
After the noise made with their Fact mix, Disclosure show no signs of stopping and we recommend checking out these tunes as the soundtrack to accompany your weekend.

Disclosure – Boiling
Jessica Ware – Running (Disclosure remix)
Disclosure – Flow

What to Wear
Clearly the weather isn’t the one right now and with unpredictable nature of living in England you need to be prepared for the elements whether its May or not. Handily there’s something which should be a key piece in your wardrobe which is perfect for any weather and that’s the trench coat, with this Burberry casual trench coat our recommended pick. Perfect for the pub or club, this works whether going casual and paired with a polo and jeans or for a smarter approach with trousers and a shirt.

Where to Eat
Starting out as a vendor under Hungerford Bridge, the guys behind Pitt Cue Co have brought their take of American BBQ to Soho where their little hideout in Newburgh Street serves up a feast of BBQ, bourbon and beer. Mains are around a tenner and include all the classics like pulled pork, sticky St. Louis ribs and brisket, while there’s an impressive list of Bourbons and beers to work through. A welcome additional to the Soho streets.

All gallery and club listings follow after the jump.

Recently I passed through the latest installment of the “Make With a Red Stripe” art project which was the conclusion of a creative road trip involving an array of artists, to a backdrop of floor fillers provided by Deadboy and Boddika.

British illustrator Rose Stallard, Parisian artist Sandrine, tech whizz Berliner Sweza, and New Yorker D. Billy were all given a creative brief to use a van as their canvas, and encourage others to engage with it as it embarked on a tour round Bristol, Leeds and London.
Red Stripe Vans
The live event saw the vintage car room in Old Street taken over as those in attendance added their creativity inside the vans, enjoyed the complimentary Red Stripe and did a little two-step to the sounds of Deadboy and Boddika.

Brands like Becks with their art series and Tiger with their Not Known series show what can be done when a beer brand goes the extra mile to promote their brand, and it’s good to see Red Stripe providing something different too with the “Make With a Red Stripe” series.

Also check out the video with installation artist Filthy Luker on the streets of Manchester who pulls together road signs and anything else he can get his hands on to make an interesting homage to alien invaders.

Back in December Swoon was in London for her first ever UK show called Murmuration, which was a mind blowing installation held at Black Rat Gallery and succeeded in taking the street art work we’ve been used to seeing in London into a larger gallery environment. Her paste works, often of her friends and family have cropped up around the world with a few spotted on the streets of London as she prepared for this show. The Murmuration installation was three weeks in the making and saw Swoon totally transform the gallery space into a world of her elaborate paper cuts and three dimensional pieces which towered Black Rat.

Big Lebowski
Would Mick Jagger play a good James Bond? Or David Bowie the perfect foil to the Dude in the Big Lebowski? As farfetched as that sounds illustrator and designer Peter Stults has made that happen by casting them in these films as part of his poster series “What if…” Movies reimagined for another time & place…

Although not the first person to give film a bit of a remix, the choices he has chosen to cast in these film poster remakes gives you pause for thought to wonder just what it would be like if Sean Connery was in The Fifth Element or John Wayne was in fact Superman. Take a look below at some of our favourites and for the full set visit Peter Stults site.

Although our coverage of Art leans towards that of Street Art in the majority, every now and then we like to venture a field and see what the more fine and contemporary shows bring. When at some of these shows I’ve often questioned the value behind some work which to me doesn’t seem to be pleasing on the eye or have much meaning, so I now tend to visit the larger events like the Frieze Art Fair.  With such a large number of exhibitors on display it’s these events which personally give me the best chance to view a range of different styles from a host of artists and see something I like.  But personal viewpoints aside, the next event on the calendar to see a range of different styles came from the London Art Fair.

Held in Islington, the London Art Fair presents over 100 galleries featuring contemporary work from leading figures and emerging talent. The show runs until this Sunday 22nd January and is worth a visit. Below are a few shots taken on my iPhone, as I clumsily forgot my camera, but should still give you a feel for the different styles on display.

Back in December we saw the latest invasion by everyone’s favourite retro game loving street artist, Invader. Coming just a few months after his VNA cover feature the streets of London were treated to a few new outside works in Central and South London as well as his Outsiders show.
DSCF2221
I’ve been a fan of Invader ever since moving to London and noticing the bright array of space invader mosaics dotted around the capital. Although some have since been taken down or stolen, there have been more than one hundred works put up since the first of his many invasions.

I was eager to find the newest additions on his recent jaunt having first caught word of the newest Invader work at the beginning of December by Lazarides gallery in Rathbone Place, however we were too late to view his subsequent workings in Brixton which some nifty fingers had gotten hold off.
DSCF2223
His show at Outsiders was a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of nearby Oxford Street as we stepped away from the last minute Christmas shoppers into a surreal and spaced out display of Invader’s work. Attack of the Space Waffles showcased his brand new mosaic Alias’, an Invader disco ball and a 20 minute documentary which covered a range of his escapades in getting the work on the streets. A nice touch was added throughout the exhibition where visitors could refuel with a space waffle, dispensed from a specially made waffle machine. Tasty.
Space Invader
Just like previous works which people have tried to take down for their own collection or means, word reached us that these space waffles had made the odd EBay listing or two.

More pictures, including the infamous Space Waffle Machine are after the jump.

Finale

Recently Village Underground played host to the world’s first live music video as part of the latest Rizlab project. Ghostpoet and Mike Skinner’s new band The D.O.T brainstormed the idea of an interactive music video led by fans suggestions, which culminated in thousands of online viewers choosing from multi-choice options in real time that were recreated as they guys performed.

In the video below you’ll see them face a yeti in a snowstorm, cheerleading quartet, bad disco dancers, a choreographed boy band and a Spinal tab homage.

Those lucky enough to attend enjoyed DJ sets from xxxy and dBridge and went home with a limited edition, numbered, hand stamped RizLab white vinyl 12’ copy of ‘Trouble’, which features an amazing remix by rising Manchester based producer Damu.

Past Rizlab projects have involved blending audio and visual with Jamie xx and Quayola while Bestival saw the Friendly Fires paying homage to the past, present and future of dance music. We look forward to seeing what Rizlab have planned for 2012.

It’s fair to say that football and fashion go together, ever since the 80′s when casual culture was born and the terraces were full of men who would spend more time getting ready for the match than they would a Saturday night with the missus. As trends came and went Fred Perry polos, Pringle jumpers and Stone Island coats became a mainstay in the fans wardrobe, although it seemed in the early noughties you were never too far from a Burberry clad warrior more intent on fighting than football. Our look this week focuses on those Saturdays at the football with an upgrade to the standard match day attire that will have you looking ahead of the crowd in the pub, the ground and ready for the post game evening frolics.
